Overview
Dialysis access is the lifeline of dialysis treatment — a surgically created entry point that allows blood to travel safely to and from the dialysis machine at every session. Well-planned, well-maintained access makes treatment more effective and reduces complications.
There are three common forms of access: an arteriovenous fistula (AVF), an arteriovenous graft (AVG), and a central venous catheter. Which is right for you depends on your veins, your general health and how urgently treatment must begin.
The procedure
Stage by stage, as it happens on the day.
-
Stage 1
Consultation and planning
We assess your veins and overall health to decide which type of access will serve you best over the long term.
-
Stage 2
Surgical creation and maintenance
Our vascular team creates the access and cares for it as it matures and comes into regular use.
-
Stage 3
Monitoring and intervention
Regular checks catch narrowing or clotting early, so problems can be corrected before a session is disrupted.
