Overview

Hemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for people whose kidneys can no longer filter their blood. An artificial kidney — the dialyzer — removes waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream, doing the work that failing kidneys cannot. It is used in end-stage kidney disease and in acute kidney failure.

At our Avadi centre, hemodialysis is delivered across 30 stations using German-engineered Fresenius 4008S machines, with nursing staff present throughout every session.

The procedure

Stage by stage, as it happens on the day.

  1. Stage 1

    Preparing access

A minor surgical procedure creates a vascular access point, usually a fistula in the arm, which allows blood to be drawn and returned safely at each session.

  2. Stage 2

    The dialysis session

Two needles are placed into the access. One carries blood to the dialyzer for filtering; the other returns the cleaned blood to the body.

  3. Stage 3

    Continuous monitoring

Nursing staff observe your vital signs throughout and adjust the machine settings as the session progresses.

Benefits & risks

Both sides, stated plainly — a treatment page that only lists benefits is not being honest with you.

What it achieves

  • Waste removal
  • Fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Blood pressure control

Risks & considerations

Because dialysis involves repeated needle access and significant fluid shifts, some patients experience infection at the access site, muscle cramps, tiredness after a session, or changes in blood pressure. Your care team monitors for these and manages them as they arise — tell the nursing staff promptly if you feel unwell during a session.
